A loan modification may change one or more terms of an existing mortgage to create a payment the homeowner can sustain. Approval is never automatic. The servicer or investor evaluates the application under the rules that apply to the loan and the homeowner’s documented circumstances.
A stronger submission starts with complete, consistent information: a clear hardship explanation, current income documentation, household expenses, bank statements, tax documents when requested, an accurate mortgage and arrearage picture, and prompt responses to servicer requests. Keep copies of everything and maintain a dated communication log.
If you were denied a modification or failed a trial modification, review the written notice, stated reason, appeal or response deadline, payment history, and prior submissions. Servicing or legal questions may warrant qualified attorney review.
Home Retention provides education and organizational guidance; it does not guarantee approval or provide legal advice. Start the Homeowner Assessment to identify your situation, goals, prior attempts, and any foreclosure deadline.
